The US Banking Industry: An Overview
Banking in the United States started in 1781 with the creation of the Bank of North America in Philadelphia by an act of the United States Congress. In 1863, the US Congress passed the National Bank Act, the events following this paved the way for the dual banking system. The present day Federal Reserve System, which put all banks in the United States under the authority of the federal government was created pursuant to the Federal Act of 1913. Today, the US banking industry is one of the most successful banking systems in the world.
